St. Johns Country Day School

College prep, redefined

These days, nearly every secondary school prepares students for college, making the idea of a "college prep" school sound almost quaint. But not at St. Johns Country Day School, which serves students from age 3 through grade 12 on 26 beautiful acres in Orange Park. With a holistic mission that incorporates rigorous academics with robust arts and athletics programs, St. Johns boasts a future-facing curriculum that prepares students not just for college, but for life.

With a student body of about 625 students, St. Johns' size enables the school to maintain a small student-faculty ratio of 14:1 while still offering a broad array of visual and performing arts, athletics teams, clubs and extracurricular activities.

"It's difficult for a student to fall through the cracks at St. Johns," said Headmaster Todd A. Zehner, himself a graduate of the class of 1987. "We have such a tight-knit community, we're really more like a family. Teachers and staff all pay close attention to each student's progress. It's like having extended family watching out for and supporting your child each and every day."

In its Lower School, St. Johns emphasizes "STEAM" (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), helping students develop well-rounded skills that prepare them for what's to come. This emphasis is carried through to the Middle and Upper School as well, and St. Johns Country Day School graduates report being so well-prepared that when they get to college they don't just "survive," they thrive.

This is due not only to the strong academic program that underpins a St. Johns education, but also to the school's "Foundations" program, a series of targeted four-week mini-courses that delve into essential interpersonal skills, leadership, future-ready global and digital acumen, crucial study habits and preparation for college life. This comprehensive program helps students become even more broadly informed and engaged, and better equips them for today's ever-changing realities in college and career.

In addition, St. Johns is one of only a handful of First Coast schools offering The College Board's AP Capstone program — an innovative diploma program that helps students develop the skills that matter most for college success.

The school has also launched two new fellowship programs, both offering robust new opportunities for students to learn, grow and excel.
